Question Which scan tool (OBDI OR OBDII)?

I have a 95 z28 camaro which from what I understand has an OBDI in it, but with an OBDII style connector. My question is what type of scan tool should I use? My buddy has an OBDII scan tool, and I don't know if I can use it or not. I mean it has the OBDII connection on the scanner and on my PCM, but my actual PCM is OBDI. Will his scanner be able to read my codes or will I damage something? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank You!

An OBD-II scanner will not "connect" with your OBD-I PCM. You need and OBD-I scanner, with a special adapter connector that adapts the 12-pin scanner connector to the screwy 1995-specific OBD-II 16-pin connector.

Shoebox has a diagram showing how to adapt a connector on his "tech pages" website.

You still need an OBDI scan tool. The adapter routine on Shoe's site will not work with OBDII scan tool. Check Auto xray and Actron for hand held units.

will auto zone be able to pull this code for me? also if the light isn't on is the code still stored in my PCM so that we can get it. Because after i turn the car off and back on the light goes away.

AFAIK, Autozone does not pull codes from OBDI cars. Generally, a code is stored even if it has been cleared.

There is a parts store around me that is called Murrays don't know if there everywhere or not.. but you give them your license and they give you one of those actron or whatever scanners.. that has a bunch of adapters to fit your car.. it will walk you through what to do and clear the codes, read them, do a diag. check and so on.. Read and cleared codes with same scanner from 02 dodge durango, 96 chev tahoe, and 86 chevy camaro.. just had to keep switching adapters.. Will probably buy one soon.. there' only like $199.99 or something..

What part of my response contradicts anything you repeated?

What I said wasn't aimed at you, Fred. I think the poster thought he could use the instructions at Shoe's site to rig an OBDII scan tool up to work on an OBDI car.
