Replacing wheel studs

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the secret to getting the wheel hub off the axle, I pulled the rear rotor off to replace a broken stud and couldn't figure out how to pull the hub off the axle. Thanks for any help.

Re: Replacing wheel studs

When I replaced my rear studs, I used a grinder to take down about a 1/4" of the tab about the 10 oclock postion. It was just enough to insert the new studs in WITHOUT having to pull the axles. I good hammer will knock the old ones out. You will see what i mean , you will see the lip that needs to be ground.

As explained above, you can't take the hub off the axle... everything from the C-clip in the centersection to the hub is a "single piece". You would have to pull the rear cover, pull the C-clip and pull the axle. You should be able to push the stud out the back. It gets a little harder if you have traction control reluctor/sensor on the rear, but there is still a way to do it without pulling the axle.

Re: Replacing wheel studs

I replaced all 10 studs in the rear end of my 94 (no TC) without pulling the axle or grinding or machining anything. If the studs can be knocked out w/ a hammer, then the new ones can be inserted the same way assuming the hub is in the same position. Rotating the axle will help to increase accesability when it comes time to insert the new studs. If I remember correctly, the best degree of rotation is, for the driverside - ~10 o'clock, and for the passenger side ~2 o'clock. But rotate as you see fit! The only PITA was tightening the new studs back into place

Good luck!

Re: Replacing wheel studs

when i replaced some of mine i hammered them in as far as they would go then i used the nuts to help pull them in all the way. It worked fine for me.
