DO NOT do the free ram air mod. There's proof that it does nothing but slow you down. I still have the hole in the underbody though, I don't see a harm in that. "
dude....what are you on crack?
how on earth can it slow you down....sure as hell isn't more resistence!!
i realize you quoted times....but still...
i can see it not making a difference....but slowing you down
sounds like something else was different....track prep, air temp, humidity, tailwind/headwind

I put the SLP lid and ram air scoop on my car. I could tell a difference on the hill-billy dyno, but I don't think it was because of the ram air effect. I think it was because the opening on the scoop was larger than the stock opening which was sealed with weatherstrip. The air coming through the scoop was cooler because it wasn't being sucked in from the engine compartment. The less restrictive lid also helped.
I don't believe there is a such thing as Ram Air. The reason why the Trans Am system or SLP style scoop work better is because they suck in cool air from outside the engine compartment and provide a larger and less restrictive opening than stock.
And the hill-billy dyno is flooring it on an uphill interstate on-ramp.

First off FREE RAM AIR doesn't have a scoop. It's just a hole. Hence the term FREE.
If a scoop was added then it was some type of boughten cold air device. And beings that you don't know the difference ..............well you get the idea.
And dynoing a free air ram air or any other cold air intake? Come on anybody could tell you that if the car isn't moving it'll make no difference.
Let's get real. The free ram air, Whisper, SLP, and Fast toys cold air kits can cause you to slow down at the track IF you don't guard against heat soaling your IAT. Idle a lot, or sit with the hood closed in the lanes and the IAT readings will soar and the computer WILL pull timing, slowing the car dirastically.

A lot of people refer to this as the "free ram air" mod, smart ***.

Just for reference, I shut my car off in the staging lanes, with the hood open.
When I ripped it off, it sat for a second with the hood closed and engine running then went straight to the lines. There's no point in arguing over this, I was just posting my own personal experience. Do whatever you want to do to your car.

WTF has a scoop for an LT1 got to do with LS1 cars. The induction set up is completely different and irrelevant.
That's NOT what a free ram air is on an LS1.
What a waste of time. All this argueing and for nothing.

And don't call me names. PERIOD.

you're right, numbers don't lie, something obviously changed. numbers are misleading!!!
if removing a 4x6" scoop from under the car gains 2mph....hell pull off both of your side mirrors and you should pick up a solid 5mph....
the gain in speed wasn't due to drag of the scoop...TRUST ME
and yes....weather CAN change in 30 minutes.
i've had storms come and go in less time, fronts move through in minutes and cause a wind shift, temp and humidity drop. a 10mph headwind changeing to a tailwind would easily affect your time and could easily occur in 30 minutes.

Ram Air Is a Valid Perfomance Mod
The principle of ram air is valid. It isn't just the fact that the air is colder.
If you stick your hand out the window at 60 mph and hold it flat, what do you feel? Thats right, pressure!
Flowing fluids behave in a predictable way. P1T1V1=P2T2V2, I.E. the pressure, velocity, and temperature sum to a constant.
Have you noticed a convertible running down the road with its roof bubbled up? The air in the car is not moving, so it has a higher pressure than the air flowing past the roof, so the air inside the car pushes the roof up. The same reason an airplane flies.
When you have a ram air hood, high velocity air jams into the scoop and stops. When the air stops all of the velocity is converted to pressure. This is the ram air effect, and the reason you felt air pressure on your hand sticking out the window.
If the scoop is large enough and the air velocity high enough you could see a few PSI gain in the pressure.
I don't know if the hoods that SLP sells really work or not. You would have to test them at speed with an air pressure gage pumbed to the air box. On a Dyno you would have no HP gain because you have no air velocity to convert to pressure.
I am interested in a hood since the front lip of my 95 is rusting out from the inside. The paint had bubbled on the outside of the hood before I saw it.
