You need to replace the intermediate shaft with the u joint and everything. Its not hard, its just two 11mm bolts. The shaft from dealer is way overpriced, I would keep your eye out for people parting out camaros or firebirds and grab one from one of those. When you take the old shaft off, you have to make sure that the steering wheel does not move!

Do you remove the shaft from where it connects to the power steering rack or from where it connects to the steering column by the firewall?

Re: Rag-Joint How-to?

You have to remove it from both sides so when your done there will be nothing between the steering column and the rack. Your gonna want to replace that whole shaft. Thats why you have to be careful not to let the steering wheel move.

Re: Rag-Joint How-to?

You don't need to replace the shaft. The original rag joint is riveted in place. Drill out the rivets and the new rag joint comes with bolts and nuts to secure the new piece. You might consider replacing it with Unbalanced Engineering's rag joint eliminator. It's a solid disk instead of the stock rubber piece. If you want the rubber piece, Napa carries them.

Another vote for the unbalanced engineering rag-joint eliminator. It is only $30 and greatly improved the feel of the steering over my old worn out rag joint.

Re: Rag-Joint How-to?

Yeah, no need to replace the shaft. Did mine without doing it. Just drill out the rivets like someone else said.

I did not know that, if the joint in my new shaft fails I know where to look.
