Question on Valves...

Yeah I'm thinking about having some work done to the heads, however I found a machineshop that would do the job for a good price if I buy all the neccessary parts.
so my question is:

1) What do I need besides the Valves?
2) How big can I open the Int/exh ?? I heard 2.020 is about right. correct?
3) Has anyone here done this? what's the approx gain on HP?

Thanks

Re: Question on Valves...

2.02 sounds right. I've seen people on this board do it before. The more valve lift you can have depends on your valves and the springs. Gain in horsepower is minimal if your car doesn't need the air. Porting and getting bigger valves on a stock engine would maybe gain you 15 horsepower. Just straight out porting and nothing else does very little.

Re: Question on Valves...

Ask your machine shop. 2.00/1.56 will fit with just machining and is cheaper. 2.01/1.6 will require new seats and boring the valve tubes. They are much more expensive to do, and the gains are minimal. Some people actually get more power throughtout the band with smaller valves and just good port work.

I am putting 2.00/1.56 in mine, porter said with a valve job and some pocket work he can get 250ish intake flow out of them without too much $.

Re: Question on Valves...

I had my heads ported and new valves/valve springs done by Bob McKray in Mission Viejo, CA...not that far from you. Might give him a call for recommendations and pricing. (949) 458-7087. I went with 2.00/1.56.
