Possible new owner, questions
Possible new owner, questions
Hey forum, posted a 'I'm new here' thread as well as some questions and well...let's face it the questions should be asked here.
Anyway, I'm looking at a red, hard top 1995 Z28 LT1.
I took some time to read about common problems and such and read about;
Optispark. 95 has a vented one so that's good but should still be replaced.
It's got the 3.23 (is that right) gears because I put the key in the ON position and the shifter moved all the way back.
Owner's brother rebuilt the motor. I misunderstood thinking he put a new motor in but after talking to the brother, he simply rebuilt it.
Car has...a different intake than a stock LT1? It's got a ram air hood (looks like a WS6 hood) and the intake is right on top, with filter that sits just under the scoop. Where the filter sits, it says Camaro SS so I guess it's simply the SS intake.
Car also has electronic cut-outs.
I test drove it and it drove well but it didn't seem to have as much 'go' as I thought. Owner says he needs to give it a tune-up IE spark plugs and such and he's still on stock spark plug wires. Could this be why I'm not feeling it?
Also, on the DASH there's a light on and well...I'll look it up right now to find out what it is.
Clean title, 140k miles on it, new paint job, no scratches/etc. with very minor 'issues' in the interior.
Is 3200 a good asking price?
He and his wife are interested in my PT Cruiser GT. It's Stage 1-level modified and well taken care of. I'm asking 5k but thought of doing a trade with cash coming from his end.
What else should I be worried about before I do such a trade?

Ok I guess it's the Coolant Light.
I had asked about overheating issues and such and there are/were none.
Also, they're interested in my PT because they've got a baby on the way and my car is just so family-oriented.

You're not getting response because this it the "Drivetrain" forum. Let's move it to "General 67-02 F-Body Tech" and see if you get some help.
My comments:

If the engine is running smoothly, all the way to redline, leave the Opti alone. If it ain't broke.....

Not sure what you mean by "all the way back". The base rear axle on the auto trans cars was a 2.73. With that axle ratio, there will be a "GU2" on the build code tag in the glove box, and the gear selector will start at "2". With the performance rear axle ratio, you got 3.23's, which are "GU5" on the build code tag, and the gear selector will start with "1".

Where is the air intake box located? If its on top of the radiator support, its an aftermarket box, similar to the ones used on the WS6. SLP sold them for both the Camaro (with their "Ultra Z" hood - single scoop in the front, not double like the Firebird hood), and the Firebirds.
A real SS induction setup would have the air intake box sitting on top of the intake manifold, with a huge duct making multiple bends as it runs forward from the airbox and wraps around the front of the engine with a U-bend that connectos to the MAF sensor and then the throttle body.
I test drove it and it drove well but it didn't seem to have as much 'go' as I thought. Owner says he needs to give it a tune-up IE spark plugs and such and he's still on stock spark plug wires. Could this be why I'm not feeling it?
Did it actually misfire? That would be a sign of worn plugs and wires. Lug it on O/D at low RPM and see if it stumbles. Low power without misifres may indicate a plugged catalytic converter - if it still has one.
Also, on the DASH there's a light on and well...I'll look it up right now to find out what it is.
Since you indicate its the (low) coolant light, it is not a serious problem. That is a frequent occurance with the sensor on the passenger side radiator tank being crudded up and not working. Try cleaning it (sometimes works) or replace it, or pull the harness connector plug off (turns the dash light off) and check the coolant level regularly.

Re: Possible new owner, questions
Wow, that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about! You sound like me when I'm answering things on the PTCrew, NorCalSRT-4 and SRTForums.
Engine was running pretty smooth for the most part, and the slight bucking did feel like it was the result of bad plugs like the owner stated it needed.
As for the gears, I meant the shift ****. Apparently, another thread with such info stated that if you put the key into the ON position and (while holding brake of course) move the shifter all the way back (past R/N/OD/D/2/1) if it stops at 2 you've got the 2.xx gears...if it stops at 1 then you've got the 3.xx gears....was stated on this very forum I believe but I can't be too sure. It's a thread I found with someone asking similar questions to mine so I read everything in it.
As for the intake, yes the intake is directly on top of the intake manifold.
No misfire perse, but I know what it should/would feel like. Certain mopar vehicles are equipped with horribly made spark plug wires and it's one of the first things we replace. The 'bucking' did feel like it could be a bad plug/wire.
Gotcha on the coolant light.
Appreciate all your help, and btw we have the same name

To be more specific, the gear selector should have a number 1 on it. The fact that the shifter moves past 2 is irrelevant, as a simple mod will allow this on the cars with 2.73 gears. Honestly, though, the car sounds modified, so who knows what's in there now.
The airbox and possibly the hood are from a 96-97 Camaro SS.

Re: Possible new owner, questions
Well, the guys car sold.
We were waiting things out because;
1. He didn't have enough money yet to put on top of his Z28 to trade for mine.
2. He originally had his car for sale as well.
I'm still on the lookout for a Z28. Least I know what to look for, just need to sell my car first.
