Parking/Emergency Brake Question
Parking/Emergency Brake Question
Hi guys! I just bought a house with a very steep driveway. When I park the Z and set the parking brake it will slip and ultimatly settle to the point that the transmission and engine compression are holding the car in place. What I'm asking is... Is there a way to adjust the disk brake system so that the parking brake will hold the car in place without putting the stress on the drivetrain?
This board has been a huge help for me over many years. I hope you guys can come up with some ideas for me (other than chocks). Thanks in advance!

I have a manual tranny car, but I would just make sure your pulling up on the parking brake with enough force. Just getting a few extra clicks can help secure the car better. Also, if you have an LT1 car then your parking brake is essentially the rear disc brakes, the LS1's have an internal drum in the rear brakes. Either way, if your rear pads and rotors are worn or if the internal drum is worn then the parking brake won't hold very well.
Didn't notice your sig at first, I'd check your rear rotors and pads since you have an LT1

just putting new shoes in will not fix the e-brake the shoes could be out of adjustment
if you have drums it could just need to be adjusted up
if it is 4-wheel disk the pads could be stuck in the brackets
either way there should be an adjustment under center console the last poster was right about something though get it looked at to see what's wrong

The 93-97 disc brake parking brake free travel is adjusted with a screw on the rear parking brake mechanism attached to the caliper. It is SELDOM required to make this adjustment, and it is generally recommended that it only be done with new pads. Worn (tapered) pads will cause the parking brake to bind, if it is adjusted incorrectly.
Shoebox has a diagram showing the adjusting screw:

I hate to say it, but it is somewhat of a fact that the LT1 disc e-brake is not too efficient. I would be skeptical of it holding on a steep driveway. I'd be looking for an alternate parking spot or invest in a wheel chock.
