Parking brake light question

The parking brake dash light on my '99 Z-28 works intermittently when the handle is pulled up. Not sure where to start looking. Can anybody help out with that? Thanks

Re: Parking brake light question

Do you mean sometimes the "BRAKE" light does not come on when you pull up the handle? Did you check the switch and the harness connector at the driver side of the base of the parking brake assembly?

Yes, that's what I mean. If the switch is defective then how do I repair that? Thanks

The switch is very primitive. Just take some fine emery cloth and clean the contacts. You'll see what I mean when you get your eyes on it.

Re: Parking brake light question

Could anybody walk me through taking the console out so I could get to the parking brake light switch? I can see 2 hex nuts in the storage compartment and 1 under the ash tray. I'm assuming I have to remove the shifter too. This is my first time doing this, thanks.

Re: Parking brake light question

Manual or auto trans? Consoles/shifters have differences.

You really need to add a "Signature". See "sticky" thread at top of "LT1 Based Engine Tech" forum on how to add one. Some phone apps do not automatically append the Signature, so if that's what you are using, you have to add that info manually to your posts.

Re: Parking brake light question

Going by memory:
1. Remove the shift ****. It unscrews.
2. Remove the shift boot trim ring. It's clipped on with several clips around the perimeter. Pull up vertically; be careful as the clips can break. Slide the boot off the shifter.
3. Remove the shifter stick. Two Allen bolts on the side of the stick.
4. Unscrew the console. You'll find screws at the front on both sides, under the ash tray, and inside the console compartment (including under the change sorter, which just lifts out).
5. Lift the e-brake handle as high as you can.
6. Lift the console a bit. Reach in through the shifter hole and disconnect the connectors for the cigarette lighters and the ash tray light.
7. Lift the console off the rest of the way.

Note: the console comes off in two pieces. These instructions cover both pieces. You could choose to do just the smaller part, but you'll have a lot more access this way.

Hopefully I didn't forget anything.
