ok so i am tired of these stupid walmart batteries just taking a crap on me. So i want to get an optima battery, which one would i get for the z, the red top or yellow top?
I have a Yellow top deep cycle. Its been in my car for about 2 years. I have let it sit and go dead (and I mean dead down to 5volts) and it comes back to life every time. I put an Energizer in my wifes car last year. It just crapped out on me this week.
I've gone through 3 red tops. when I store my car I disconnect it and keep it inside but they still don't seem to last. I'm also running two amps and two 12" subs so that might have something to do with but in my opinion they aren't worth the money.
Yellow if you are a gy who likes to listen to his music with the car off. Red top if you do everything with your car running. I have an optima red top that is 7 years old and it is still going strong. This last winter I left it plugged into my Z28. went completely dead. not even enough power to turn the volt digital volt gauge on. Brought it inside, put the charger to it for 2 days. and it started the vehicle right up and has been just fine ever since. Guess it is a hit or miss. You could also try out the Exide Orbital batteries. Same features as the optima, same warranty, and they work pretty well. And are about 10 to 20 cheaper.
If I'm not mistaken, all the Optima Batteries are deep cycle (Red, Yellow, Blue). Red is meant for wired accessories and huge draws of power. It's has more cranking power. Yellow is meant for extended intervals between use, or for powering things without the car running. Blue is a marine battery. So for all you guys storing your babies, try a yellow top.
actually only the yellow top is a deep cycle battery. the other's are not. the red top is classified as a starting battery. Yellow top is used for people with larger stereo systems that they play when the car is not running. Blue is marine.. not like we would have to bother with those.
Blue is definitely deep cycle, as is the Yellow Top, you may be right on the red top being starter battery only. Either of them would be fine for an every day battery on a daily driver. But like I said, if you want to store your car, or it's a weekender, go for the yellow top. It's meant to sit for long periods of time with low voltage without hurting it's lifespan.
