oil change question

is it possible to reset the change oil light before it goes on? im going to change my oil tomorrow and want to keep it so i know when to change it next time. ive had the car for awhile and havent changed the oil due to it being in the body shop for so long.

thanks in advance

Re: oil change question

I do believe it is possible to reset whenever you feel like it. I don't have one in my 95, but my wife's Tahoe does. I never rely or go by it because it is not based on mileage. I have found the light really comes on at around 4-4,500 miles. So I just reset it whenever it comes on and use the static stickers to remind me when 3,000 miles are up and do the oil change. This is assuming GM is consistent with their programming for this feature from one vehicle to another.

Yes, I do this all the time since I reach my own personal time interval long before I hit the mileage to change. The owner's manual will tell you how to reset it.

Re: oil change question

That resets your trip odometer, too.. I heard there's another way, i think it deals with gas pedal, but i can't remember.. it doesn't reset trip.

Re: oil change question

my wife's 2003 buick is as follows:

key on, engine off
press throttle to floor 3 times
change oil light will blink then go off
it's reset

BUT, the thing I have to do is actually go under the hood and twist the throttle bracket by hand or it won't go all the way over to WOT and it won't reset.

Re: oil change question

I use mine and its just started coming on so this week is oil change week. It does fluctuate by a few thousand miles either way..
so it has its way of guessing the mileage and it isnt always the same..

Re: oil change question

From what I understand it goes basically by total rpms. Not milage. But then again I wouldnt know 10K in 3+ years and god knows how many oil changes already I change my oil when I think its due and Im always wrong cause i cant remeber the last time I actually changed it so I just do it
