Helicoil or buy new bracket?

Power Steering pump threads are shot. Had to drill a bolt out. Should I buy a new accessory bracket or will the helicoil hold?

I've never used helicoil before.

Re: Helicoil or buy new bracket?

Helicoil and helicoil type inserts are stronger then the original threaded aluminum. Most are faily easy to do. Especially if you can drill the hole using a drill press. Lots of these kits come with everthing you need, including the drill.

I had to completely drill out the bolt and removed almost all of the threads. Will it still work or do you need some threads left?

the ones ive used require you to drill the hole out larger than the hole desired and then thread the hole and insert the helicoil. if you were to buy the kit you would see its pretty straightfoward and comes with everything you need.

Re: Helicoil or buy new bracket?

You are replacing the old threads with the helicoil. Drilling them out, retaping the hole and inserting the helicoil, so in most cases you should be ok. Once you redrill the hole with the helicoil bit you should be able to tell if there is enough material left for the tap. In most case you can go one size over with out problems. For me the hard part is keeping the hole centered. You may be able to use the bracket as a guide.
