Oh YEAH!
Oh YEAH!
WOO HOO!
My little bro is now the proud owner of a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Z28 RS!!! WOOO!!!! (or is the "IROC-Z" the same as "Z28 RS"...??? i dunno...don't know much about the 3rd gens :d)
Anyway, It is white. with black hood louvers. and red interior. Who came up with these color schemes? :P Any suggestions as for to the first mods that he should do to it? I believe he has the 350...not sure. Have yet to find out. Anyway to tell without pulling anything? what RPO codes might we look for? Thanks!

Re: Oh YEAH!
From your description, you don't know what you have.
In 1987 you could get a Z28 with a IROC option so the correct name is IROC-Z. There is no such name as Z28 RS period. Check your RPO codes located under the console lide for what you have. So many cars sold today by sellers who say a car is a 350 and other things when it noting more then a plainjane 305 Camaro with a decal kit on it. Someone didn't check his purchase out.

Re: Oh YEAH!
If its tuned port injected you got a Z28 or an Iroc...if it almost looks carbuerated it's got throttle body injection which means its an RS. If its a 5 speed it can only be a 305, if its auto it can be a 350 or a 305.

Let him check the RPO codes if they are still on the lid.
Re: Oh YEAH!
it should say "5.7l tuned port injection" on the driver side of the rear bumper if it's the 350. least i think the 87s said that.
but yeah...the VIN number is the easiest check.
basic mods:
gut the air box below the filters, make a ram air kit from behind the fog lights if he wants
port out the air intake Y
port the plenum
bump the timing a couple degrees and run premium gas
new distributer (or at least cap/rotor), wires and plugs
underdrive pulley if he doesn't intend to run a big system
160* stat
relocate the IAT sensor
headers and a good catback and it should be sitting pretty

This is the kid with the new camaro, my brother is Blahster, I do know what engine it is, it is a 1987 Camaro Iroc-Z z28 305 5-speed. I hate the interior color, but that will be changed soon. I have major pulling on the left side when braking, so I will be getting a set of Drilled and Slotted rotors for the front, along with new calipers. I'm not doing any porting or anything major to my engine until I can fully rebuild it to a 350. Here is my question, with my 5 speed, will the transmission work with 350. What do I need to do to upgrade it? If anyone has any kind of cd player they want to sell me for cheap, I'm in need of one. I can't tell if what I have now is an 8 track, or casette. But it would be great to be able to cruise to some linkin park or something. Thanks.
P.S. helpful hint. Look on the top left hand corner of your stock hood, it will tell you what engine you have in it.

Your pulling to the left could be a brake hose. I'd suggest replacing them as well. The hose goes from the hardline to the calliper.
Yes your 5 speed will work on a 350, but dont expect it to last long. It will die a fast death behind the power and torque of a 350.
Re: Oh YEAH!
Can I upgrade to a different tranny then if I want a 350, or can I fix the tranny to support the power? Should I just rebuild my 305 or would someone suggest maybe going to a 327 or something. It is TPI. And is also leaking oil from the oil pan, front main seal, and I believe the rear main seal. But I need to clean off everything first to be sure. So thats why I need to rebuild it, and clean it up alot.
Re: Oh YEAH!
there really isn't much point to try to beef up the 5spd...it's still a weak point.
best bet is to swap in a t56 from a 4th gen.
rebuilding a 305 is questionable. depends on what you want out of it. if you just want a nice reliable, relatively powerful engine. sure rebuild it. it will perform nice.
but if you want alot of power....the best thing is to go to the 350. it has much more potential.

Re: Oh YEAH!
Can the transmission handle a built 327? What about swapping the center consol, from a 93-03 camaro with the one in my car, heck, the whole interior for that matter. I like the new interior in the 4th gens. Otherwise, I need to find carpet and everything, to get rid of this horrible red. I hate it.
Re: Oh YEAH!
Welcome to the board, and try doing a search on this website for 4th gen swaps, or try this site, as they do many many 3rd gen to 4th gen swaps IRT interiors as well as drivetrains:

327's are nice if you have already got a build plan/parts/block and nice flowing small cc heads. If not, for cost purposes, I recommend a 350 buildup, it will be as powerful or more, and many more options available cheaper.
