I'm so use to driving my 1997 SS witch has no emissions, no cats, no egr, no air system. nothing whatsoever left from the emissions.

and when i bought my 1996 SS which is 100% stock, when i get on it at WOT, it whines really bad, almost sounds like i have a blower on it. I've got no idea where its comming from. Could it be the air pump on the belt? i've never had it on my 97 so i dont know if thats it or not

I'd like to get it the hell off of there, but may wait till i put some headers on, and go with no cats.

has anyone had any similar noises?

 

Not the AIR pump.... that's electric, and only runs for a few minutes at startup.

 

i wish i could record the cound or have some1 else with me to listen to it. could it be the cats?

 

Isn't there some sort of "cone of silence" installed in the SS exhaust systems? Maybe that's the source of the problem.

 

my '94 does it too, not nearly as much since i got a new waterpump though...

i dont know if my car has it or not, i thought it did, but some say only 97's had it, and others say some of the late 96's got it. mines number 2032 for 96 with a build date of 06/96 i know 08/96 they were using the cone of silence. i tried to get mine apart, but no luck. i need to take it to a shop and see if they will do it for me, i dont want to cut any of the exhaust to find out its not in there.

 

Could be a couple things if the noise is coming from under the hood.

Bad seal on Throttle Body, would make a whissle sound.
Bad alternator bearings going out, sounds like a super charger or slipping belt.
