Nitrous or Gears?

So with my M28 Transmission I have pretty much decided to keep the stock gears. I don't want to make my first gear unusable, so I would only be able to upgrade to 3.42's, which I don't think would be worth it. But maybe it would still be a good idea.

And the next option is a nitrous kit. It would only be getting ran a couple times a month, so how much would a set up like this cost? And would I need any additional upgrades other than what comes in most kits?

Opinions appreciated.

the more horsepower you make, the less of a need for gears there is. unless you want to turn higher rpms than needed. a really basic kit from harris speed works is around 380.00. that would get you going. getting a window switch is a good thing, because you are a manual car. wouldn'twant to miss a shift and over rev it.

So you would run 2.73s on a 500 HP car? That's rediculous. Regardless of horsepower, gears get you into the power band RPMs of your engine faster, making you quicker.

I've never been a fan for nitrous. Sure, its cheap horsepower, but it can destroy your engine (let the arguments begin ). If gas mileage isn't a big deal for you, I'd go for the gears. Plus, its a mod that will complement any other horsepower mods. Just my $0.02.

You do realize his M28 1st gear through a 2.73 is a bit steeper than everyone elses MN6 with 3.42's? Not so "rediculous".

Not sure though why 3.23's or 3.42's wouldn't make sense with the M28.... that would produce an equal or slightly steeper overall ratio than the MN6 with 4.10's.... and give you more grunt in 2nd and 3rd.

Nitrous is argubly one of the best bang for the buck mods. As for those who claim that it destroys motors, there are several factors that come into play that should be considered before installing such a kit. You should do a mechanical check on your motor, a compression and cylinder leakdown test, to ensure that the engine is healthy. Also, safety devices such as a fuel pressure safety switch, window switch, timing retard, ect should be considered as well. A basic nitrous kit can run a few hundred bucks, a properly setup system will run you a little over a grand. Finally, don't get greedy with the amount. Some people see it as easy horsepower and keep pushing the limits.

In your case I'd get the gears first, then nitrous later. If you want nitrous tough a wet kit won't cost ya much, I got a zex one and it's only set up for a 75 shot... something that small isn't even worth worrying about. Go with a wet kit, and go with a small shot, doesn't have to be as small as the one I'm running, and you'll be fine.
