Need Help ASAP* Changein oil need to know..

Hey, all this is my first time changein the oil on the LS1, but i dont know where the friggin plug is for it on the oil pan for it to drain out. I see the oil filter, but not the drain plug. I am in a jam cause i dont have a lift and cant totally see everything under there, right now i am just stacking up boards, so i have enough clearance to get my head under. Is it on the passenger or drivers side? Filter is on the drivers so i would assume thats where the plug for the pan is.

I changed the oil when it hot many times. When you unscrew the bolt, just turn it but keep it pressed againt the oil pan. Dont try to pull it off until you have it completly unscrewed. Once its uncsrewed, move it away. And keep your arm ot of the flow of oil.

Thanks i found, it I have a bout 4"s of clearance so i couldnt see it that well, but now a new problem has arisen..lol i cant get the friggin thing off. Who ever change the oil last must have used an AIR HAMMER to put the friggin plug back in. I torqued the **** outta it with my wrenches and nothin. I actually started to round off the corners on the bolt. I WD-40'ed it too and still nothing.

make sure you are using a 6 star wrench to take it off. Less chance of rounding the head.

I work at a oil change place and always have to change those ***** while they're hot. Ive NEVER had an LS1 come in that wasnt skin scolding hot. Plug is damn near the oil filter, 15mm drain plug.

thanks guys for the help, i dont wanna bring it to a place to get it done because i like doing this stuff on my own. Plus it saves money in the long run. If my car was up higher then i prob coulda kicked the wrench a little to get the friggin plug out...i dunno it was on there so tight i couldnt believe it. Ur supposed to be able to unscrew it with your fingers for christ sake, and not use a friggin air hammer.

Did you finally get the drain plug out?! Sometimes what you can do (if you have the room to get in there) is use a second wrench locked into the first wrench and use it to extend the length and get more leverage. Be careful doing this obviously, but if you can't get enough leverage, that's a little trick you can use.

two words, torque wrench. =)

just to unscrew, and not alot of pressure.

I had the same thing on my lt1, and in small clearances, we dont have alot of power, especially since you are doing it lying on your back.

do yourself a favor and before doing any more work, get these things....

1. Ramps, $19.99 pep boys, Jack & Jack Stands $50

2. Torque Wrench $50 for a descent one go to home depot, lifetime warranty.

3. Oil Filter wrench, I got some on clearance from pep boys, that are like sockets, but just shaped for filters! sweet! They were only $2.50 on clearance.

It isn't a standard 5/8" it's a metric 15mm. Use a combination wrench with the closed end on the plug then take another combination wrench and put the closed end into the open end of the 15mm that is on the drain plug. Doing this you can easily double the torque to the plug.

BTW you should not use torque wrenches to loosen things. Torque wrenches are for tightening things to specific ratings.

Use a 15MM ratchet with a breaker bar to get it off, also wait 20 minutes or so for the engine to cool off before you start working on it, makes life a lot easeir. I'm glad I waited for things to cool off because the oil just shot out of the plug and got all over the place and in my hair.
