Question Manual Fan Switch Install

I ordered a manual fan switch kit from eBay last week and it finally came in. I'm impressed, it looks pretty nice, but it'll look even better once I get it installed into my car.

So here's the deal, I have to use the power wire from the cigarette lighter as a power source for the LEDs and all that jazz, but.. by golly I can't get to the part of the center console where the cigarette lighter sits. I took the dash apart, and it seems like the whole center console is one giant piece.

I just need to get behind it and splice it in. I have a hayne's manual but it doesn't have the entire dash disassembly process, so any suggestions or easier ways to wire this bad boy up, please let me know.

Thanks,

-Joe Blaze

LOL, I probably bought the same part. The centre console on my 96 Z28 had 2 bolts in the glove box, one bolt under the ash tray, and one bolt in the back of the "CD tray"...I guess that's what you call it. Any who, there was a double sided piece of tape with a foam insert holding together the so called "CD tray" to the bottom of where your radio is. I nearly out of frustration wanted to break out the crow bar for that. Once you've released everything it's just a matter of lifting the whole piece over your shifter and yada yada. Hope that helps.

If you just need to get to the cigarette lighter wires, then you don't need to take the whole console out. The upper portion of the console detaches (the part where your shifter is). If you open up the console door, you will see two latches just in front of the console bin. Push these forward and pull up and the upper portion should come out. From there, if you can't get to the cigarette lighter, you will need to detach the shifter and take the upper console completely off. For a manual, unscrew the shift ball and slide off. For an auto, take out the retaining staple on the front of the shifting handle, and pull up, then slide out the upper console.

Hope that helps.

All you have to do is were that lighter is theres like a square plastic piece around it and the lighter is in the middle. Just take a flat head screw driver and stick it in the edges and pop it off. Simple as that.

Re: Manual Fan Switch Install

you can just stick your finger in the lighter and pop that sucker out... if you can't, just find the wire that comes out of it and runs to the fuse block and tap in there.

it lets you turn your cooling fans on and off as you want and it allows them to still be automatically be controlled by computer. The advantage is that you can turn on the fans when the engine is off so you can cool it off when the you are in the staging lanes, traffic, ect.
