Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
I'm planning on adding some lights to my interior, but I would like to have them turn on when the door is opened. How do I wire these up so they will turn on when I open one of the doors? Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Re: Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
Splice into one side of the 2 wires running to the door switch that turns on the interior lights.
One side is always on and the other goes on when the switch is activated.
Or run them off the interior rearview mirror light wires.

Re: Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
I splice the positive of the light into the door wire, and then I guess put the negative of the light to the chassis? Is there a certain color for when the switch is activated? When I hook into that wire, does that also mean I can turn the headlight **** all the way to the left and they lights I'm adding in will turn on along with the dome light?
Re: Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
Yes positive to the switch wire and negative grounded.
I don't know the colors.
You can get a cheap test light which is always good to have.
The end is like a dull needle and you can test the wires
by poking into them to see which side is switched.
You can use a pair of wire strippers to just expose some wire without cutting it if you like and wrap your light wire around it.

I don't know about the dim switch.
It may work but my guess would be no.
I think if you want that you'll have to run some wires off the dome light under the headliner then across the top of the windshield then down the post.
Unless you can tap into another interior light.
I'm not familiar with a 91.

Re: Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
One last thing I forgot to verify, do you mean there are two wires that go to the little push switch that is pushed in when the door is closed? I do not have power windows or door locks if that makes any difference.

if not, they run in the harness from the fuse box area down along the drivers door sill then they split from the harness and run up the b-pillar itno the headliner
see if you have courtesy lights first
Re: Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
I have never had lights come on under the dash before, and I just went and checked and I do not have lights under the dash. So what I need to do is get into the fuse box and find the orange and white wires and slice into those?
Re: Make lights turn on when the door is opened?
I wouldnt just splice those lights into the circuit, it will most likely blow the fuse or cause an electrical fire or something depending how much power it pulls.
Use a relay or something.
