LT1 Catalytic Converter

Is it that hard to install on a 94 Z28? I have no welding materials or access to them. Are clamps good enough? I need to save money and I think mine's about to bite the bullet. I wanted to buy one and install it myself. I saw that after the cat it can be unbolted but in front it would need to be cut. I figured that I could probably get a clamp for the front. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks,
Shawn

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter

You have two options:

Expensive. You can buy the entire y-pipe with the new cat welded on. Just unbolt the old and bolt up the new. This will cost around $150-$200 and be the easiest to do.

Cheaper, You can purchase a universal 3" in and out and cut the old cat off and weld up the new one. You will need to rig a cat support mount too. Universal cats go for around $60-$70. I dont think clamps will cut it.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter

I'll have a week old cat for sale here in a couple of days if you're interested. Its a magnaflow high flow that i bought new and installed in my car but since i have heads, cam, and a lot of overlap its just to hard to keep the cat cool and fear of the heat causing damage or something. I'm going to replace it with a bullet muffler this weekend. I had it installed on Thursday April the 6th.

wrd1972 - Where can I find the expensive option? With the cat welded on...the dealer?

Z95m6 - How much are looking to sell if for? That's the one the local muffler shop wants to put on for me but it's $279 and I can't afford that at the moment.

Thanks for the help.

Magnaflow has both versions. Anybody who sells magnaflow should be able to order it. The dealer will rape you.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter

Don't do that, you can buy new high flows off ebay for about $65 shipped. I'd probably sell mine for 40 shipped. I paid to have it installed and it cost me $80 just last week, so at the max you should have about $150 in the whole setup if you go with a new cat. I'll have my cat off this weekend and i'll inspect it and get back with you.

Unhappy Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter

Hey Z95m6 and wakebordr2006 I'm going to have to pass . Good news for you wakebordr2006 I assume. I just got a letter Friday saying I have to "Vacate the premises" of the house I was renting so I had to put all of my money I had down on a new house. I really hope my converter doesn't go out till I get some more money. Thanks for all the help though. I appreciate all of the information.
