Loose steering collumn..

Hello all. I'm sorry I posted to the engine board but I don't know where else to post. I just bought a 96 SS that needs MAJOR TLC, but I'm determined to get her where I want her. The tilt steering collumn is loose and has lots of up and down play in it. I've removed the air bag out of the steering wheel,, where to next?? Also, what is the best way to fix loose flimsy interior vinyl? Glue? All help is greatly appreciated

if the wheel is loose, try taking off the plastic panels around the steering wheel column, and try to trace the problem from there. it could be that the locking mechanism is worn down

This is a common problem with the tilt wheel. Do a google search for gm tilt column repair. Here is one link to the repair procedure. http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...air/index.html

It's not very difficult but you do need the correct tools.

Re: Loose steering collumn..

This is good info. I didn't know this was so common until a mechanic told me about it today when he inspected my 2001 V6... I use my tilt on a daily basis and never noticed it to be loose.
