Looking to buy a lt1 with a blown headgasket... advice?

looking to purchase a 93 Lt1 with a blown headgasket, car overheated was shut down, no oil in coolant or coolant in oil, but continues to overheat since there is a leak in the coolant system from the headgasket.

I figure will take me a few days to get it down, but overall not too bad of a job, witht he exception of 100 year old exhaust manifold bolts.

Car is a good deal, for what it is... any thoughs on it?

Other than a down right thrown rod, an overheated engine has the second best chance of being cracked.

You stand a bettery chance of getting one that MAY not be cracked by random selection in a JY.

Also a 93 engine is an entirely different beast unique unto itself. No other year was like the 93. The 2 major differences were no MAF (speed density) and batch fired injectors (as apposed to sequential). If you plan on replacing the management computer with an aftermarket system, this may not be an issue for you.

Put those 2 reasons together and I would avoid it like the plaque. But if you are getting a hell of a deal AND you can part it out or sell it outright for a profit, you may be able to fund a different project.

There are too many "what ifs" involved with that car in my opinion. As mentioned above, even if there is not coolant in the oil, it doesn't necessarily mean that the heads and block are crack free. But if you can get it cheap and find a used or rebuilt motor, then it may be worthwhile.

Con't to over heat isn't a headgasket there is a different problem. The headgasket is the resault not the cause.

IF its a good deal I would assume the heads are warped and will need machining. Cracked block and rod knock takes more than you think. I would price out assuming it needed a rebuild for the good deal and hope it just needed a gasket or a little head work.
