Just bought 94 Z28

Camaro has 75000 original miles. BBK headers and 3 inch flowmaster exaust, k&n cold air intake and a programmer chip. im wondering what other simple and cheap mods can i do to it myself for more power? im guessing it is running around 300 hp on the motor now right? im not sure what to do with the programmer chip, the guy already had it set up to his specs. its got an auto transmission also. just looking for some advice from some awesome camaro owners.

Welcome to camaro Z28.com
You basically have all the cheap mods already
next you might be interested in some 3:73 gears and a stall converter most people seem to recommend something around 3K on the stall.... but if you are planning on a cam in the future
the cam , stall , gears all needs to work together so do some research and determine what will work
best for your setup

The programmer chip i have showed an option for gear ratios, it was set on 4.10 but i put it on 3.73, is that for my rear end or do i have to actually install those gear ratios??

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

The programmer (no removable chip in a 94) allows you to change the gear ratio in the PCM (computer) AFTER you actually install the gears. If you change it BEFORE you install your gears, the speedometer/odometer will not be correct, and shifting of the auto trans will be affected.

While your "chip" can make some basic changes, the program in the Hypertech programmer, if that's what it is, doesn't really produce any significant HP gains, unless you also install a 160*F thermostat and lower the fan on/off temps. Better than a programmer would be a mail order PCM tune. That will pick up 10-15HP simply by leaning out the excessively rich target A/F ratio used at WOT.

You can pick up 6HP for free by bypassing the coolant that flows through the throttle body. Drain the coolant below the level of the throttle body, pull the two hoses off the bottom of the throttle throttle body and connect them together with a 3/8" hose barb and a couple clamps. Replace coolant and bleed air fully from system.

Consider adding a set of 1.6X full roller rockers.

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

When i plugged the programmer in it was already set on certain things including the 4.10 gear ratio. the guy i bought it from is currently deployed and he had his friend sell the car. his friend didnt know anything about the car really. it looks the guy has put several different mods on the car, i just dont know for sure if he put 4.10s in it. looks like a whole new suspension under the car. so i have just left the programmer set to what he already had programmed it to. are those rockers expensive that you mentioned? i dont know alot about working on cars but im not opposed to trying to figure stuff out or have someone help me so i can learn.

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

also i read in a camaro performers magazine a few years back about a 97 Z28 and i really wanted to do the same to mine when i get the money for it. they took the stock LT1 and put a 383 stroker kit on it and also used the LT4 conversion kit, sait the combination was good for 500 hp? is that right? and would anyone suggest doing that to my car? not sure how much they said it cost in the magazine.

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

You can make 500HP at the flywheel with your 350 LT1 and stock rotating assembly. Ported stock LT1 heads and cam package from AI or Lloyd Elliott. Long tube headers with a good catback. Larger injectors, computer tune. You don't need a 383. The only advantage of the 383 would be a bit more streetability, due to it's ability to handle a larger cam without the bad street manners.

The LT4 conversion would be pointless. Your stock LT1 heads can be ported to far outflow the LT4 heads/intake. There are many cams that make a lot more HP than the LT4 HOT cam. Putting that cam in a 383 would be way too small.

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

Thanks man. I got some more options now. For now im gonna enjoy driving it the way it is. Its pretty quick. Looks like the guy that had it also put a suspension upgrade too. When I get to talk to him I will find out everything he had done to it. Shifts kinda weird. Not sure if it has a shift kit in it or not?

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

You might be experiencing strange shift patterns because of the gear ratio that you have selected
in your chip???? I would put it back the way it was if you changed it ??
don't forget to create a signature wit the some of your cars information " what upgrades it has "
having a signature helps other members to help you with your questions

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

Thanks guys, i do love this car, i had a 93 formula LT1 with a 6speed, lost it and now 7 years later i was able to get this Z28. so its been a long time coming and im just loving driving this camaro. its loud, louder than my formula was but i only had a flowmaster muffler on the bird. i just cant wait to burn a few ricers and maybe a mustang or two.

Re: Just bought 94 Z28

Do you think it would be safe with my current upgrades on my camaro to have LE1 heads and the sleeper cam installed ?? if so what kinda horsepower gains could i see? I saw it on a site for 1200 dollars and i dont know much else about it.
