my cars center console only shows it going back to 2nd gear but if you pull it back just a little past 2nd i can get first out of it, and a guy at a tranny shop said that he notched the shifter on his sons camaro and he could get first but i didnt even have to do that.....

 

If you pull the console off, there is a little rubber block there that prevents the driver from engaging the tranny into first. I cut it off with a utility knife and it goes in first every time.

It's what the 2.73 rear end geared people call the "1st gear mod" or "selectable 1st gear mod". It's been discussed a lot over the years.
