Ignition trouble, key won't turn

When I tried to start my 97 Firebird(auto trans, v6) yesterday, the key would not turn in the ignition. It was locked, but it would push down and unlock the steering wheel, but that's it. Thought maybe it was the key so I tried the spare with the same result. Thought then that it must be the ignition column, so took it all apart, put in a new ignition column... and the same exact thing happened! So frustrating!!! I am totally stumped about what it could be. If anyone has any ideas about what it could be and what can be done, I would greatly appreciate it. If you need more info and have specific questions, I would be glad to answer.

You might try to see if the park/lock cable is causing it to stick.
