ideas for using stock mailslit tips on aftermarket exhaust???

I have the tips, I just want to make them work w/ my aftermarket exhaust...

I never realized they were only made one way, not a left and a right one...

since my current exhaust outlets are centered, depending on which way they are attached, it will appear that the exhaust is piched to the left or the right...(Ie out of center)

for people that dont know, this is what they look like. both of them

short of welding on the 3-5" extension the aftermarket pipe would need to clear the inlet tube and make the exhaust appear centered, anyone have any ideas?

flipping one upside down is a good start, but the tips are slash cut w/ a rolled lip and would look silly. it would clearly look upside down

i'm thinkin about flipping one over, dremeling it so it is slash cut the right way, then rolling the lip to match

someone has had to have dealt with this before....

also, since i'm running 3" pipes, do you think stepping down to fit the 2.25 of the tip with a pipe coupling will have a major impact on restricting flow? I wouldn't think so, but i'm sure someone knows this as well for sure

I would use some other tips, for sure. Why neck down?? It's going to hurt the flow. I guess I always thought of them as "dustbuster" tips. Just my two cents.

When I had my Magnaflow muffler put on, the guys at the shop intentionally made the pipes come out from the new muffler just like the factory ones (not centered exactly) so that when the tips were put on they would be centered.

Nice job with the drawing. I tried to do that once and ended up with a mess. 8-)

Anyways, I always liked the mailbox slits myself, so I took mine to a welding shop and had them cut off the face about two inches back, flip it over and weld it back on. We took the grinder to it afterwards to smoothout the welds and then I repainted them. They looked very nice.

Of course I just recieved word that my SS BB Triflow has shipped so, I expect that I'll be using the BB tips at first, but if I don't like the look of them I'm putting the mail slits back on. Of course, I'll have them sand blasted and powder coated black this time so that they are a quality looking piece.

As for reducing flow, I doubt it will be any harm at all. One three inch intermediate pipe flows more than enough for a mildly modded LT1. By the time the exhaust flow reaches the back of the car, it has cooled off substantially and therefore the volume of has contracted.

I made the number indicated in my sig line through these tips. As good as any bolt on/Hot Cam car around.

Ive always liked the stock tips. I was thinking about getting a GMMG without tips or just selling the tips (if they are the round ones) and putting on some of these just because I like the stock sleeper look.

Re: ideas for using stock mailslit tips on aftermarket exhaust???

I really gotta figure something out. I wonder if anyone makes a stock style tip with a 3" inlet?

the other thing being is that anything I could find was up to 2 1/2" inlet size...

i may have to custom fabricate this myself....

also:
does anyone have pics of their car w/ stock style tips???

Those look cool!!! I might have to get a set! I take it that they're a direct replacement for the stock mailslots?

With those you will have to offset your tailpipes or else the tips will look wierd. With these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1993-...QQcmdZViewItem
you can put them on almost any aftermarket exhaust and they will line up and not be offset. So it depends if your going to use you stock catback or an aftermarket one.

Yep, those are what I'd do if I wanted to keep em. Most exhaust shops should carry them too. If they don't have them they can usually order them.

I still have to deal with the 3" inlet though....

I think it may be time to break out the grinder, the welder, the flaring cone and some sheetmetal...

time to fab me up some tips!
