I think my starter is fried

I tried to start the car this morning, and at the same point when the motor would usually fire up, I heard a grinding noise from the direction of the starter. I decided to try it again after a few seconds and it fired up just fine. When I left work, I tried to fire it up but I got nothing. The lights would dim and the door ajar chime was quieter, but the starter wouldn't engage. I tried it 2-3 times, then popped the hood. I smelled some smoke coming from where the starter was. I think it's safe to say I need a new one, but this is all based on common sense and not any actual knowledge.
