I may have burned up my fuel pump.

Ok so my gas guage doesnt work and I thought I had more gas then I really did and I ran out of gas today. I put 5 gallons in it with a gas can. I primed the pump and started the car and heard a big backfire, then the car started running extremely rough and died. I started it up a few times with the same result, engine ran like crap and would die. Well I popped the hood and my friend started the car up and revved it, it backfired through the throttle body a few times and then smoothed out and idled fine. Well now everytime I hit the brakes real hard to stop or turn the car just shuts off. It will start right back up but then die again everytime I hit the brakes real hard. I am thinking I burned up the fuel pump, what do u guys think? thanks, Dustin.

Sometimes if you run the tank all the way dry some of the sediment in the fuel tank can get sucked through the pump and lodged in the fuel filter. It's a long shot, but since the fuel pump is such a ***** to change on these cars I'd be inclined to change the filter first and just see what happens.

Well luckily for me I already have the trap door method done. Its just still kind of a pain in the butt to have to pull it back out and swap out the pumps. I jsut wanted an opinion before I went back up and got my free replacement.

Heh guess I got lucky, I did the same on what I believe is the original 11 year old pump put gas in it ran fine. Where'd you get your replacement pump previously? Autozone pumps are known to go bad quite often on other vehicles and I suspect it is the same on firebirds.

Yes it is an Autozone unit. I am evenually going to upgrade to a better pump when I do a bigger cam and ported heads this winter. But for now since I have the trap door I can live with changing them out as long as they are free. I am going to check my MAF later to see if maybe it got damaged when the motor backfired through the throttle body. Peace, Dustin.
