how to troubleshoot hvac *****?

Hey folks,

My vents on the '97 z28 dont' blow any air - it only blows out of the top defroster vents on the dash.

The check valve seems to be fine (its not cracked), and the hoses don't seem to be cracked. I'm pretty sure the vacuum leak is coming from behind the *****.

I know I have to go in there and test vacuum at all the little hoses, but - how do I get back there in the first place? Do I have to take the entire dash apart, or is there a way to pop off the front "face" and pop the ***** forward?

If anyone has any advice or pictures, I'd really appreciate it. thanks!

Hey shoebox,

I've seen that page, it's helped immensely!

I actually used those steps to determine that the vacuum leak is in the cabin, not the engine bay. Your page doesn't tell me how to get to the hvac vacuum lines/tubes behind the ***** though?

PLEASE post on the correct forum.... a question about HVAC ***** obviously does not belong in LT1/LT4 Engine Tech.

Ok. Under the RH side of the dash is probably where you need to look next and find the vacuum hoses. I don't have a guide for taking apart the dash (especially on a 1997).

Great! I presume I have to pop off the glovebox to start tracing back the vacuum hoses?

Thanks for your help, shoebox!

Just pull off the bezel that surrounds the vents, radio, and selector. It's held in by a few spring clips. Then you'll see a couple screws holding the a/c selector to the dash. Remove them and you'll see the different color vacuum hoses connecting to the back of the selector. I had a similar problem with my old dash, it turned out to be leaking at the place where all the hoses connect to the panel. I ended up replacing the section from the a/c panel to the connector. The vacuum lines come in two parts so you can unplug it and just replace the section of hoses and don't have to replace all the hoses going to the vacuum canisters.
