Question How tight should lug nuts really be tq to?

Just curious since I've always just "snugged them up". But now that I have ET streets that I put on each time at the track and with working on my friends stock car we are pulling tires all the time. In highschool I think we would put them on at 100lbs. Is that about right? My reason asking is Im thinking about getting a cordless impact for use at the track and I would like to know how big of one I need. thanks

Aaron

I think it is 100 ft lbs, I swear I remember seeing that in the manual as I flipped through it before.

Its 100 ft-lbs. I don't torque mine, though. I just use my impact wrench.

I'd guess you're torque wrench is broken then, because 100 ft/lbs, is really darned tight -100 in/lbs would be a touch more than finger tight however, but I sure hope you aren't using 100in/lbs for your lugs!

For alloy wheels with conical lug nuts, 100 lb-ft is the norm. For a shank style lug, with a washer, like the Welds use, its 60 lb-ft. Nothing wrong with removing the lugs with an impact wrench, or with running the nut up to the wheel with the impact wrench, but final tightening is best accomplished with a torque wrench.

I made that mistake a few months back and broke a stud.

I now have a torque wrench, 100- is it feet or inches? I'm not sure, I'll be so embarrised if I break another stud or have a wheel fall off
