How to remove automatic shift **** from a third gen?!

Hi, I'm currently removing the whole carpet in my car to repair the floor, but I'm stuck on the rectangular shift **** on my automatic trany! It's a 91' Z28, and I would like to know how to remove it.

Thx!

Same as on a 4th gen. With the car off, but key in "On" position, push brake and pull lever back as far as it will go. Using a flathead screw driver you'll see a metal clip on the back side of the handle, just pry it out.
