How hard is it to replace wheel bearings?

What special tools would be required and how hard is it? Also, anyone have an idea of the cost for new bearings? Thanks

Actually, on your 4th gen car you are looking at replacing the entire hub assembly.

Remove the caliper and disk, then unplug the ABS connector and take out the 4 bolts on the hub.

It's a cake-walk.

So theres no way to actually change the bearings, the whole hub has to be replaced? I knew how to get the hub off but didn't realize it couldn't be opened up. Thats a pretty dumb design in my opinion. Oh well, anyone have any idea how much $$ and where the best place is to buy one?

I had to replace my front right assembly about three weeks ago and it cost around $150 from the local auto parts store. I'll agree that it is pretty easy as it only took me around 15-20 to remove and replace the part.

So what about in the rear, is it the same case? My right rear has been making noise for some time.

I'm really not quite sure. Surely somebody will know if the front and rear are the same. If I could get a hold of my dad I could tell you for sure because he's a mechanic.

The rear is not even close to being the same. The bearing is pressed into the end of the axle housing and the axle actually rides on the bearing rollers.

Re: How hard is it to replace wheel bearings?

There is a big difference between removing the axles to replace the outer bearings and seals, and removing the differential carrier and pinion to replace the gears. Yes the axles have to come out in both cases, but that is where the work begins in the case of the gears, and almost where the work ends in the case of the bearings.
Setting up a new set of gears takes some tools - setting the pinion depth, and skill – checking the tooth contact pattern. It is not something a amateur can do on the driveway. Replacing the bearings is simply a matter of removing and replacing.

Yea, i am well aware of what it takes to set up the ring and pinion, if i need to drain the fluid and replace the gasket i might as well do them at the same time. Thanks noobi
