How fast are Highway Patrol LS1's?
Here in Florida, we've got a bunch of LS1 Camaro highway patrol cars. Does anybody know anything about these? What kind of treatment do they get before hitting the road?

Oh, alright. I heard they got exhaust and a cam, but I looked on the FPH site and they only claimed 310 hp, plus all that electronics stuff (weight)

One of my neighbors is a mechanic for a police dept. here in FL and he says the only thing different from my car and the FHP cars is theirs have a larger alternator.
It's believeable. A stock A4 LS1 will catch 90% of the cars on the road from a dig or a roll.

My friend and I were disagreeing on how fast they were. I think its some of the crown vics I was thinking of with the cam. He seems to think that by just altering the "chip" they can somehow top out at 180 mph.

Even WITH the factory "speed limiter", LS1 cars are good 'til ~162, or somewhere thereabouts!!!
And maybe there are cars that will out-run an LS1, but at some point they'll have to slow down and/or turn, and the LS1 car won't be that far off that you won't be able to see where the guy turned.

Gosh, Do I HATE those, "I got an Ex-Police Crown Vic / Caprice / Camaro / Mustang people..." Seriously, I wish I had a dollar for every BS Story I have heard about a magical engine installed in a Police Interceptor, that some guy bought, that runs 9s on the motor. Hell, I'd take $.50 for of each those Crown Vics are badass story I have heard...

it is even possible that they are slower in the top end...150+ due to the extra air resistence of the light bar.
i know when the 94 mustang body style came out, they tested top speed and picked up 2 or 3mph by removing the spoiler.
but basically...same car

Re: How fast are Highway Patrol LS1's?
Back in the pre-emissions era, some of the "police packages" did have pretty hot motors. I guess that's where these urban legends got started. But even then, they were just combinations of already available factory options, AFAIK. The particular combination may not have been available to the general public though. For example, a particular car line might normally only allow you to order the hot motor as part of a pimped out package while the po-po could order the hot motor with a stripped interior, and so on.
A stock LS1 is more than faster than 90% of the cars out out there. More like 99%.

You also have to consider even if you have a faster car, like a low 12 second cobra or a Z06. You are not going to be able to get away from an LS1 camaro, sure you'll be head of them, but they will still be able to follow you and radio other police cars to intercept.
Now if it were a 10 second street rod versus a regular police cruiser you could probably get away.
However i wouldn't recommend it.
Sorry I know this post is somewhat unrelated to the topic.
