You have to take out the entire dash. It is really not as bad as it sounds though.

I've been needing to take mine out, but the complete dash removal and the amount of work to do it keeps me putting it off.

Basically, my car is steet legal, but I only bracket race with it. What is the weight, 5 pounds maybe?

the plastic cover on the dash DOES NOT have to be removed the one that says air bag, I just did the one in my 95 bbc project was removing the hvac and removed the air bag while the dash was loose not out, the top dash pad is very brittle be carefull one bolt at the bottom of each side of the dash (has ground wires on it) lots of little screws at the top ,one behind the console.it has lots of wire retainers hooked to it the whole air bag and metal bracket sort of roll out with the dash leaned forward, total pain in the ars

honestly don't remember, but can weigh both as I still have them laying around. The grant wheel is alot lighter than stock with a bag though. also took off cruise, abs and changed driver seat to manual from power.
