How do I know if the carbon canister is shot?

Hello

96 T/A - just has a cold air and cat back.

I get poor gas mileage and I saw in another thread someone mentioned to check the gas cap for smell of fuel.

I have noticed that I consistently smell fuel from my T/A around the gas cap area.

My v6 has never had this issue.

I could replace the gas cap as a first start.... but what are your thoughts on the carbon canister?? How would I know it is shot?

Thanks

Pull the vaccum line on the passenger side of the intake. If it has charcoal in it and if the line appears clogged (wont pass vaccum test) then the cannister is shot.

Throw it in the street, if a car hits it then its even better than it was when it was on the car.
