How Can I Avoid Emissions

My question is very general. I live in Glendale AZ where emmision testing is done every 2 years, including a visual inspection. Now when I build/swap my new motor into my '90 Iroc Z I plan to use a nasty cam and lose the smog stuff. The only way I have heard of people getting past emmsions is swapping motors every 2 years, which would suck, or registering the car in a different city that doesnt test. Is it easy to register the car in a diffferent city and get away with it, or is there a better way, any info would be greatly appreciated.

The only way you could register it in another city is if you life there, have property there, or have relatives there that would let you use their address. At least that is how it is here.

I'm going through a similar situation now that I installed my long tubes with no cats. so I have to go through additional effort to modify my y-pipe to accomodate cats. There is so much stuff out there that can allow you to build a very potent motor and still stay emissions legal. Otherwise, like you said, you will either be swapping stuff alot or you'll get used to the alternative of paying huge fines and having your plates taken.

Or just get to know a shop really well... ask around and get to know people in the car repair/modification market...

Visual inspections are easy to pass if you know people, computer inspections are a little different though, and a little more complicated to pass.

Re: How Can I Avoid Emissions

Down here in Tucson its a yearly inspection. I thought Phoenix was the same way...

Basically like what was said before. You need to know people that live in a county without emissions. You also need to have proof, my buddy tried to register his car and they asked for some sort of a bill, like a phone bill with his name on it.

I just keep an extra y-pipe with cats on it and I have LTs with the emissions hookups.

You can get a waiver for a "show car" but there a limitations on mileage per year.

Re: How Can I Avoid Emissions

I live in Virginia(AUTOMOTIVE HELL!!!) and we are fairly strict on emissions. I got my car inspected today, the guy only took off one wheel to check the brakes, got inside to turn it on and make sure no lights were on, and put the sticker on. You gotta find the kind of places that has a bunch of older guys who are into the old muscle cars(the place I go to has an ENTIRE PARKINGLOT of nothing but Oldsmobile 442s, about half are stripped and the other half are freaking show car quality). I asked the guy about modifying things, he said as long as the cat(s) are there, along with the smog pump/egr valve, he'll pass you. Which in reality those things don't KILL performance, I think you'll see a maximum of 10hp MAYBE with all those things taken out. A high flow cat will help, or just gut the stocker.

Get a job as an emissions tester and pass your own car

Move to an area w/o testing.
