Ok, this is pretty embarasing at times. If I'm driving and I pull on the steering wheel a certain way, the horn sounds. It's gotten to the point where I have to place my hands at the bottom of the wheel to keep from honking at everyone. If I pull the top of the wheel slightly toward me, it goes off. Any ideas of where to start? I'm a bit nervous working with around airbags.

 

my horn is weird too. it only sounds at half tone. lol so if i hit it it sounds like a little kia or something honking at you.

 

Sounds like a short is happening, which is how the horn actual works is you are grounding the power from the horn to the car's body from what I understand when I had to find the switches and wiring piece from a junkyard. ( Don't know why someone took it out, came like it when I bought it) Probably a flaky switch on either side of the steering is my guess, or maybe a bare wire hitting metal??

Its not to hard to pull the steering wheel apart, but I forgot what kinda allen wrench it took. But there is six screws (maybe four can't say for sure as my car is at my dad's) , three on each side (two if its just four), behind the steering wheel. I'd check it out, and I dont know how sensitive that air bag is or if it is even safe to pull it out ( I've done it about 4 times now ) but if you are worried disconnect the battery before digging in there. I'm sure someone else can tell you if there is a chance of it going off by accident .

 

Yeah, I figured it was a short, just wasn't sure where to start looking. And from my understanding if you pull the airbag fuse, they can still go off for hours later. Hence my fear.

 

Mine was doing this when i first got the car. With the age of your car what has probably happened is the spring in the switch has punched through the back of the plastic housing. I bought a new horn switch harness off of ebay ($20), swapped it out and haven't had the problem since. Removing the airbag is not as scary as most people think. Four screws on the back and a plug. I've had mine out a few times and i've never pulled the fuse prior to removal but that's prob not the safe way.

 

Thanks man. I have my horn fuse pulled right now. Don't like not having a horn, but it was going off all the time. Do you have a picture or a link to the harness you are talking about?

Ecklers has most everything but they are proud of that fact. (little pricey)

Yours sound like either a bad horn or maybe faulty relay. I'm leaning more towards a bad/clogged horn than the relay. Relays either work or don't work i believe. ( I'm no expert)
