Headlight Upgrade

Heyya, gang. First off, let's eliminate the rainbow, blue, wanna-be HIDs, etc. and their ilk. I'm looking for regular, ultra- or super-white lights, whatever they're called.

I want to upgrade the low beam lights to a lo/hi beam (yes, I know it'll need a different plug and wiring, no problem there). I want to keep the regular 55w low beam, but want to upgrade to 100w high beams, preferably on all 4 lights.

So, does anyone know of our size lights (I've got the cooler, older front end ) that have replaceable bulbs? Will the charging system be up to task? Sources to get these things?!

Anyone else upgraded theirs similar to what I'm after?

Thanks for any help.
Smokey

H2O, thanks for the link. It's not exactly what I had in mind, but if nothing else comes up, then that'll definitely do it .

How long have you had yours on like this? No problems? What about aiming them- do the two surfaces meet flat and square? It'll go straight in w/out a bunch of hassle?

What about if one of the new bulbs fail, how do you re-do it a second time?! Especially if you use JBWeld!! Even the Mighty Dremel (I own two ) might have issues with that

So... will our charging systems handle a 400w headlight load? Maybe run the new set-up off a separate relay?

?... That sentense contradicts itself.

I did that mod too, it's worth doing. I used 65w 9005 Silverstar high beam bulbs.
You have to cut a ridge out of the bulb socket to let the harness plug in.
Use high temp silicone, not JB weld.

I had one burn out and I just pulled it out, cleaned off the RTV and glued another in. They aim the same and the pattern is the same as long as the bulb is clocked the same direction and it's pressed in all the way while the RTV cures (use a rubberband to hold the bulb in while curing).

Please explain I'm no English major or anything, but I fail to see any contradiction. Maybe I worded it wrong? How about...

I want to keep a 55w lo, but want 100w hi at all four lights?

Feel better

The confusion is there is only 4 lights total 2 High Beams and 2 Low Beams. So to have 100w for all 4 means no 55w lows

I'm guessing you mean you want 2 - 55w lows and 2 - 100w highs

Smoke....

I have had this for about 2 years no problem. They are much brighter than stock. I have terrible eyes and the car was almost un-drivable for me at night.

All I did was buy the replacement housing and replaced the bulb with Silverstars, they lined up perfectly. I sealed them as instructed with silicone. I wrapped the back in electrical tape as well so added insurance. What I cannot comment on is whether or not they leak...the car is a sunny day only car and I am careful when washing to not get much water in there.

Wow... I'm having this discussion with... car guys ?

Okay, once more from the top...

The mod calls for 9005s for the low beams and 9006s for the high beam.

(this next part is gonna blow you away)

What if I used a 9004 combo-light ?! You know, the one with a low beam and a high beam ?! Whoa... dual filaments?! Who knew?!!?

Thusly, one can have 2-55w low beams AND 4-100w high beams. As stated in the original post, yes, a plug will need to be changed but that's easy stuff. Adding a relay... wow, nothing tough there.

Sorry for the confusion there. It's a lot to grasp, I know .

H2O, thanks for the link. I'll post up the swap when I get it done.

Might want to ditch the condescending attitude, or this post is going to get closed.

From the OP's first post, I had to read it a couple times to understand..

Dual element in the low beam, good luck... I personally hate wiring...

Injun, if you look at any of my other posts, I am nothing if not courteous and friendly. I didn't come here to stir any trouble or make enemies. Not my style.

But it seems, no matter what forum on whatever subject you go to, there's always "that" guy that must correct the poster, flexing their "superior technical skills" or "superior use of the English language or grammar" or whatever. Out to show someone up. I may be new here, new to Camaros, but I'm far from a noob I've been wrenching since I was 12; I'm 40 now !!

So anyway, I'm called out because of a "contradiction"?

I went back and re-read my post and I just don't see where any confusion would occur. Seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Anyway... I got an answer I can work with. It appears that there are no replacement lights with replaceable bulbs? Gotta use the mod above?

Good enough. I'll post my results when I get it completed. My only concerns now are if my charging system can handle a 400w load and if the heat of a 100w bulb (they do burn HOT!!) will soften the silicone....

Well, thank you to all that assisted

(I'll try to make my future posts easier to understand )

English lesson? lol wow, that wasn't the issue.

As 96 Z 28 understood, you stated you'd have 6 filiments using 4 bulbs witout mentioning the slightly important fact that you plan on using some non-factory dual filiment bulbs. I figured you were confused/unsure of the factory bulb layout or something, chill out.

There are high temp RTV silicones that will handle 700 degrees continuous. They should work just fine.

Your charging system will probably be able to deliver the ~30 amps required to power 400watts of lighting at cruising rpm. Plus you probably won't have ALL your lights on all of the time... but then again I won't assume
