Is this a good starter mig welder?
Lincoln Handy-MIG
I want to get into welding and will be doing some exhaust work next spring as well as SFC's and was wondering if this was a good welder at a decent price??

dosen't look bad i guess, i got a lincoln pro core 100 last spring for 300, it is set up for flux core welding up to a 1/4 inch while that is only rated at 1/8 inch. You can convert it to mig with a $100 kit i believe which i may do, it welds exhaust fine but it is just not as clean as a mig weld would be.

I think its too small. it will work great for exhaust and may get the SFC's ok but you will need at least 150A to be able to do any real work. consider getting a 220V unit so you dont wind up having to do it later when you want to weld some heavy stuff.

I use a Lincoln Electric Pro Mig 175. It has the 220v and I use Co2 to create the pocket. It also will do gasless with the larger tip, fluxcore (.9mm) and polarity cables reversed, but the Co2 makes the welds much cleaner.
To answer your ? though, it would make a good starter kit just to practice the principles, but you will need "more" later.
