Why not just tap into the output of the headlight switch, or the dimmer rheostat? You wouldn't connect it to the turn signals.

The switch and the dimmer are on the dash. On mine it was a simple matter of pulling the bottom panel off and accessing the switches. I found an unused conector up near the headlight switch - appeared it might be factory pre-wiring for fog lights. I checked the pins of the connector with a voltmeter, and one of them had +12V when the headlight switch was on. I tapped into that wire. But you just need to access the switch or the dimmer, and probe the wires with a volt meter until you find the one that provides +12V when the headlight switch is on.
