Foglights question

My car is a 1994 formula. I hit a deer, busted up the nose, and ended up getting a good deal on a transam nose which never came with foglights. I found some foglights for sale and bought them. They come with the foglights (obviously), the mounting brackets, and pigtail wires.
What is needed to hook them up and actually get them working?

Re: Foglights question

Do you have a foglight switch already on your dash? If not you'll either need to get a used(or new) GM replacement one, or get an aftermarket one. The aftermarket ones are cheap, I dunno about the factory replacements. Then as far as I understand run the positive wire of the switch to power and the negative to ground, then the positive and negative wires after that to the corresponding foglight pigtails. Make sure you have a fuse inline somewhere between the car and the switch and you'll be all set. It's been awhile since I've messed with foglights so the information might not be 100% accurate. It'll give you the right idea though.

Re: Foglights question

Whether or not you already had foglights on the car will make a big difference on how to hook it up. If so, just wire up the fogs to the existing wires in the nose IF you're not going to use high wattage bulbs in them.

To install a switch, I suggest a GM replacement installed in the dash where the factory switch goes. Run a wire from the ACCY terminal on the fuse box to the switch. Then the other wire goes through the firewall to a relay in the engine compartment. If the foglights didn't come with a relay, you'll need to get one from an auto supply store. It'll have a wiring diagram showing how to hook it up. The switch wire goes to one coil terminal, the other coil terminal wire is grounded to the frame. Then run a wire with a 15-20 amp inline fuse to one of the switched terminals. Run a wire from the other switched terminal to the lights and run a ground wire from each light to the car frame. You can use 14-16awg wire for the switch connections but use 12awg wire from the batt. to relay and from relay to lights and the ground wires for the lights. That way you can slap in some 100w replacement bulbs and not overtax the wiring.

Re: Foglights question

no, the car didn't originally have foglights. the foglights I got are factory transam foglights. I just want to wire them up so they turn on when i turn the parking lights on and they stay on when i turn the headlights on.

Re: Foglights question

OK, ya still need the relay but instead of a switch, just tap in to the positive side of any of the marker lights. This wire goes to the relay instead of the switch wire but do the rest of the wiring as above. The fogs will come on with the markers and stay on with lowbeams or brights.
