You can monitor most everything the computer sees with a real scanner. It's not just for looking at trouble codes.

A new scan tool, I recommend getting an enhanced version, can run anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand for a professioanl outfit. Autoxray and Actron are fairly popular for the home user.
