failed emissions

failed new jersey emissions. passed HC but failed the CO. i tested at 59 and the limit is 50. how can i reduce the CO. does the fact that the car has been sitting for 3 years have anything to do with it? can a tune up or something drop it to passing levels. maybe i need to clean something somewhere.

Re: failed emissions

CO means too much fuel, if you fail that and pass HC chances are you have a good cat, clean out the carbon while car running spray some carb cleaner or whatever, then change the o2's this means too much fuel.

Re: failed emissions

would dirty oil or air filter effect the emissions at all? would any engine cleaner you dump in your oil help clean up the emissions. also is the 9 point difference a big deal or would it be easy to drop the nine points.

Re: failed emissions

Hey Hyperspeed;

Saw a few versions of that additive you describe. This was a few years ago, but think I was turned off by the wording on the guarantee. Things might be different now, but just think - wouldn't nearly everyone, from states who have emissions testing, be talking about how wonderful these products are?

At least that's my slant. Good luck to you.

Steve

Re: failed emissions

in all seriousness, since my car was sitting for 3 years and hardly driven would any of those cleaners help out a little bit? maybe dry gas. i only tested 9 points over. i dont really know how much of a difference that is.

Re: failed emissions

How many miles on the car?

If you have over 60,000 miles it's time to change the o2 sensors.

Re: failed emissions

My 88 dodge diplomat was sitting for over 9 years and passed smog just after two hours of running it on the freeway to get it warmed up. It was weird, black smoke was heaping out the back and then went away after awhile. I stilll have no idea how it passed smog the first time. I wonder if it's because it has 5 Cats on it. lol
