How old are your 02's? Do you have any exhaust leaks? When was your last tuneup? I would check these things first.

Try new O2 sensors, if that doesnt work try a new cat. I would try those 2 things in that order. Also I believe if you let the car warm up, like go for a 15min drive before you go get it inspected should help lower the smog count, because more particles will burn off in the cat

When does your current emissions certification expire? Maybe you don't even need to worry any more about passing emissions in IL with your car...

I guess you were high on HC's....

My Ranger recently failed, but it had a bad coil pack on the exhaust side (8 spark plug 4 cylinder, FTW...) and the unburned fuel ruined the cat convertor as well.

That was better than the shop telling me the failed coil fudged a cylinder and I needed a new engine soon.

Try the tune-up and check all the ignition stuff out first.

Running rich

A cat.convertor not working properly will make it run rich, and also check to make sure your knock sensor,s wire is hooked up b/c if not car runs rich and you could be getting 15 degrees of KR.Goes w/o saying but all emissions working/hooked up make a big difference! Here are some of my readings(24ppm)for H.C(JULY03)and 0.10 forC.O .My results from JULY/04 were 18ppm H.C and 0.00 C.O so i,m living proof that you can be CLEAN/MEAN and GREEN.Also make sure air filter is clean /new,pcv is new,egr is working.
