Do Performance Induction systems increase noise?

Things like Cold Air Intakes, Bigger Throttle Bodies and Manifolds/Runners. Do they increase noise? or is that just a myth?

A cold air intake will definitely increase engine bay noise. Take a look at a factory air box on a car and you will see all the baffles and restrictions that are in place to cut down on noise. Then take a look at an aftermarket CAI kit which is just a open filter and a tube and you'll see the difference.

slightly, but not to the degree of an exhaust.

Re: Do Performance Induction systems increase noise?

a cai will create more of a sucking noise under acceleration, but it is not bad. I like the sound of the engine sucking the air in.

LT1 F-bodies aren't too bad because the filter sits way down in the lower driver's side in the fender. My Durango was a whole different story, as the filter sits up top and on the side. I can hear that CAI plain as day right through the firewall. Sounds cool too..

You will hear a whoosh like sucking sound when you mash the fun pedal only.
My Arizon speed and marine makes an even louder sound then the Moroso CAI I had.

Im not sure what this indicates.

I could hear additional noise when I removed the OEM rubber elbow with the elephabt trunk silencer and replace it with a trick-flow metal elbow.

Generally when more air volume is moved through an opening it will produce this kind of noise.

No myth. When I put an FIPK on my '96, there was a noticeable and welcome increase of induction sound. (Not noise!)

I can clearly hear the CAI when accelerating (If I'm looking for it), and I can hear it from outside the car when its idling. I personally think its a cool sound, and kind of covers up the LT1 tick.

Re: Do Performance Induction systems increase noise?

I have the SLP CAI and it is very loud during cold starts. Loud gurgling noise that goes away as the car warms up. Before I installed my exhaust, I could hear a "spooling" type noise from the engine under heavy acceleration that I suspect was from the CAI (others reported similar noises).

But its been years since I've heard from my CAI...loud exhaust and loud stereo.

Re: Do Performance Induction systems increase noise?

I love it. I had a '72 Chevy truck with a 350 in it. I pulled the original intake mani and Q-Jet carb and threw on an Edelbrock intake mani w/ a Holley 650cfm carb w/ vacuum secondaries. What a difference... even over the headers and dual flowmaster exhaust, you could hear the "whoosh" of sound when secondaries opened up.

I also have an AEM Short Ram intake on my Integra. Big difference in sound over stock on that, too. Not nearly as cool as my truck was, though. lol.

I can hear mine from about 15 feet away in front, moreso near the windsheild because of my cowl induction hood.
