Do I need ABS working for cruise control?

I haven't had functional cruise control since I got my car, but the ABS has been disabled due to the 9" rear swap (PO didn't have the 9" built with the tone rings and sensor mounts for ABS).

Are these two systems interconnected, so that attempting to find a "fault" in the cruise control system would just be a waste of time for me?

They are not connected. I have a 9" in my 95 Trans Am, ABS is not operable but cruise control still works just fine. Been this way for over 8 years.

Re: Do I need ABS working for cruise control?

Did you have to change anything else? I've been reading other threads that say when there's a problem detected with the ABS system, it takes out cruise control at the same time....that basically, if the ABS INOP light comes on, the cruise won't be working. Although I found a thread on another forum where a couple guys that installed a ABS delete kit (removing the ABS stuff under the hood, and installing a standard proportioning block) still had working cruise after, so I don't know if it's a matter of removing certain parts, or changing something else after.

No ABS (Strange 12-bolt rear axle sensor died), but cruise control continues to work. Did not to anything. The 94 factory manual does not show any inputs to the cruise control module from the EBCM.

Re: Do I need ABS working for cruise control?

Did some basic troubleshooting over the weekend, found the switch signals from the multi-function lever weren't getting to the control module (checked at the connector at the module). I picked up three more levers from the junkyard today, none of which fixed the issue. So I'll need to check continuity on the wiring down the steering column to see if the problem is there. It's been colder than a witch's tittie here the last few days, so I'll try again when it warms up a bit and report back. THanks guys

Dug into the column today and found three of the four wires on the cruise harness appeared to have shorted out inside the column. Repaired that section, and cruise is working again :-) thanks for the help, guys.

Re: Do I need ABS working for cruise control?

Yep..I'm thinking the case of the cruise and ABS going out at the same time may be just when one of the brake lights goes out, as that seems to be the only common thread between the two systems that would also cause problems on both systems. But if it's one of the ABS sensors or module that goes out (or like in my case, is just flat missing), that shouldn't affect the cruise system.
