Disconnecting Left Horn Button - Door Dinger Question
Disconnecting Left Horn Button - Door Dinger Question
I couldn't figure out why the previous owner of my '93 Z28 pulled the fuse for the horn. I put one back in and hit the button in the auto parts store parking lot and it worked fine; I smiled. Get on the road and I hit it again, IT STAYS ON. Holy **** that was a long drive home with my horn blaring! It seems it's only the Left horn button, the right one works fine. I personally think a horn is an important safety device so I'd like it fuctioning properly. I'm wondering, are there actually two buttons or just one with two pressure points on the wheel? Like I said, the right side works fine. What I'd like to do is disable the left horn button, hopefully just by unplugging it. Will the right side still work?
I'm really nervous about taking the steering wheel apart because of the airbag. I have a Haynes repair manual and it explains how to disable the system but I want to make sure if I follow the directions correctly my airbags won't deploy. Disconnecting the battery isn't good enough because they have their own power source. Has anyone done this before?
Another question I had is the open door buzzer/dinger thing won't stop going off, although the doors are closed. I know the door switches are good because the vanity lights work properly. Any ideas on that one?

Re: Disconnecting Left Horn Button - Door Dinger Question
On a 93 Camaro, there are two separate horn buttons that connect to one power source inside the steering wheel.
Follow the instruction in the Haynes manual just like it says, and your airbags should disable properly. I've taken my steering wheel off twice using a Chilton's manual (IMO better than Haynes), followed the steps accordingly, and had no problems with the airbag. As long as you follow instructions, everything should be fine.
One more thing, when taking off the air bag unit, be careful to not damage the horn buttons and/or connectors. Since you have a 93 just like me, the plastic buttons may be brittle from age and heat, and they can be easily damaged. Trust me I know.
Good luck, and hope this helps.
