With relatively the stock motor? I heard in stock trim they're horribly slow, but what about increasing boost or upgrading turbo and installing intercooler intercooler etc.

anyone know?

The 89 tta was the same motor trans as a grand national and therefore could be made to be very fast. The 81ish turbo trans am was a turbo charged 301 pontiac motor. 301's were great.... boat anchors!

no kidding on the "boat anchor". The T301 was actually voted the worst V8 engine EVER MADE by Hot Rod magazine. It made number 1 out of a top 10 worst comparison. It was a true steaming heap of crap.

Yes, then can be made fast... but for a very pretty penny....

Luckily, a bigger Pontiac V8 (326-455) can bolt right in there.

Yes, the 301 is not much worth modifying, IMHO. But you can make the car faster anyway by removing weight, optimizing gear and traction, etc.

Re: Could those older TAs with the turbo v8 be made quick?

I've modded a few of them and there are problems. The stock heads flow like crap. In order to get any performance, the heads need a port and polish, the exhaust needs complete replacement and the stock oiling system is also crap and needs an upgrade. If you don't upgrade the oil pump and flow, expect to spin a bearing. I was able to get a couple of these cars into the 12s with a 125 shot, broken parts being part of the learning curve. A big problem with these motors is that very little is common with the other pontiac V8s. There are just not that many performance parts available like for the other 326-455 motors. If the parts exist, expect to pay a premium.
