cooling fans won't come on?

My friend has a 97 Z28 and his cooling fans won't come on. I checked the fan motors and they work, tested relays and they work, and I changed out the temp. sensor and switch and the fans still don't work. Ran a test on the car and got code 1441. Dealership is saying it's the computer and it needs to be changed and they have to do it because they have to reprogram all the codes or something. Any ideas on what it might be, and if it is the computer does the dealship have to do it or is it something anybody can do? Dealership wants $450 just to install something that'll take 5 minutes so he would rather do it himself if possible. Thanks

You said you changed out the temp sensor, which one? There are two, one that control the gage (which is located by plug #1) the other is on the water pump that control the pcm.

P1441 Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) system flow during non-purge

Or do you mean:

P1641 Fan Control (FC) relay 1 control circuit

Hard to believe its a faulty PCM.... although you might want to get them to at least clarify the codes, and why P1441 would be related to the fan problem.

Re: cooling fans won't come on?

I changed out both sensors, the one on the water pump and by plug #1. I read in the repair manual of his that code 14 or 15 is a temp. sensor problem and he said that code came up and that was after I changed the sensors for him. It may be the wire so I'll have to check that for him. The bad news is he blew the heads already because of this problem and doesn't have the cash to fix it right now and he's still driving it. I don't know why 1441 came up but it may be a whole other problem. I'm gonna pull his heads off for him soon though but I have to figure out this cooling fan problem before I throw it all together, so if anybody has an idea let me know. Maybe a toggle from to the fans off the battery would work at least for now?

Try SLP Fan Control Switch, I ordered mine from Summit for $69.95 PART# SLE-63011 www.summitracing.com It hooks up directly at the computer harness under the hood. It has a off, low & high setting, turns on both fans, and when not in use, allows the fans to operate normally.
