Cooling Fans
Cooling Fans
Is the radiator fan on the driver's side considered the secondary fan? Is it a backup fan or how does it work along with the primary radiator fan? Is there an A/C system fan? My driver's side radiator fan is directly wired into the fuse box, so I'm guessing it was replaced once before, but I'm not sure on why it was wired up that way. It used to turn on with the power and run constantly, but now it doesn't and has triggered a SEL. I'm thinking its dead and needs to be replaced. Does anyone have experience with this?
Re: Cooling Fans
Both fans are normally controlled by the PCM, and operate at the same time. Stock programming turns BOTH fans on LOW SPEED at 226*F, and increase them BOTH to HIGH SPEED at 235*F.
The fan motor power should come directly from the red positive box on the passenger side inner fender. There is a fusible link in the wire at the box. The power passes through a system of three relays in the under hood fuse/relay box.. The fans should not be connected directly to any fuse in the fuse box. They should connect to relays. Only the signal side of the fan relays comes from a fuse in the fuse box.

If someone has wired a fan to run all the time, or to be controlled by a separate switch, and it is not wired correctly, it can cause the SES light to come on. From Shoebox:
