changing fuel filter

I'm going to be changing my fuel filter tonight, and im just wondering how i go about changing it because ive never done it before. Am i supposed to open the gas cap to relieve pressure? Then take the filter off and put new one on? Thanks, I just want to keep the mess down to a minimum and don't want to get blown up either.
