It's direct plug and play.

In fact, you can even get a non-Bose CD player and just swap the Bose pre-amp section onto it. It's just a few screws and the unit comes apart into modules. The Bose module from your cassette player will fit on a standard CD player.

In this picture you can see both modules. The Bose (foreground), and the standard. Note that the Bose has a smaller heatsink because it is preamp only.

Here is a picture of the CD module.

The CD module connected to the face

Just the face

Bose on the left, standard on the right. Note the heatsink difference.

how the preamp / amp section can seperate off.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I need to know if it would be at all possible to keep my bose system in my 95z and swap in an alpine touch-screen. OR should I stop screwing around and put in new speakers all around and a sub in the rear?

You could get it to work with an adaptor harness.

If it were me, I'd just replace everything at that point.

I prefer to use factory head units to keep the dash looking stock and lessen the chances of a break in.

I would keep the stocker, but the cd player no longer works and I would rather have a fully functional one that I can plug my ipod directly into.

I'm going to go all after-market, I have some pioneer speakers sitting around here somewhere, I'll just have to make use of them

Crutchfield helped me, I bet they can help you too. TraceZ you really seem to be up on your electronics. For about 10 years I worked at a Delco subcontractor repair center, and when questions about Bose head units came up the standard answer was to replace/repair the Bose head unit. I have'nt been able to leave the stereo alone in any vehicle I've owned, starting with my first car. Crutchfield sells an adapter harness that allows aftermarket head units to work with the Bose amps/speakers. I prefer Pioneer head units and was very happy with the results. Crutchfield also has easy to follow directions for taking the car apart and putting it back together.
TraceZ: what do you think about the sub enclosures that fit in the drivers side of the lower hatch area, opposite of the spare tire ? Think a sub could be put in there probably with an aftermarket amp for power ? Thanks

Does anyone think this Crutchfield harness will work, pending I do keep the bose speakers?

The factory Bose system uses line level outputs. These line level outputs use the connector pins that are otherwise used for speakers on non-Bose systems.

I'm sure your new head unit will have line level outputs, so there is no need to use a harness like the one you linked to that converts speaker level to line level.

What you can do, is make your own. I'd recommend getting the basic adaptor for the camaro, the one they sell at Wal Mart and soldering 4 RCA jacks onto it. Then plug the harness into the car and the RCA Jacks into the radio. A couple other wires like Bat+ Ign+ Gnd and Ilum and you are done.

It won't be too hard to do.
